Hva er et menneske?
The State and Cathedral Choir will be giving a concert at Oslo Cathedral for the first time. The governing body of Berlin Cathedral is known as the Cathedral Council (Domkirchenkollegium [DKK]). Every year, approximately 1,000 musicians and roughly 15,000 visitors arrive to enjoy this special festival in the churches of Oslo.
The festival, which was founded in 2000, has made it its mission from the very start to bring people together, irrespective of their affiliation or world view. After Festival Director Bente Johnsrud had the chance to enjoy the State and Cathedral Choir in action in 2016 at Berlin Cathedral, she extended an invitation.
In Oslo, the choir will be presenting a programme entitled ‘What is a human’ (Norwegian: Hva er et menneske?) together with lautten compagney BERLIN. It consists of musical works from the collection held by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, which was believed to have been lost after the Second World War and was only rediscovered in 1999 in the city of Kiev. The collection is considered one of the richest historical music collections from the 15th-18th centuries. The second part of the programme is predominantly influenced by the history of the State and Cathedral Choir. The men and boys perform musical works by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Albert Becker and Otto Nicolai, all composers who in former times conducted the State and Cathedral Choir.
The team will also be giving a masterclass at the Oslo College of Music, during which time music students can work together with the choir.
Before the performance in Oslo, the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir will perform the concert in advance at the Baptismal and Matrimonial Church in Berlin Cathedral.
