Holy week and easter

Holy Week and Easter are a very special time at Berlin Cathedral. From Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday in particular, a multitude of devotions, church services, concerts and a procession follow a path that leads from the dawning night to the joy of Easter; first in silence, then in great joy and with festive music.

On Maundy Thursday, the service is celebrated at nightfall with communion before the altar is covered and the light is carried out of the church. On Good Friday, the altar is covered in black, the wooden cross on the altar steps draws attention to itself and the organ is silent. After the service, we carry the cross out of the cathedral and join the congregation from St. Mary's for the service. The cross is carried in ecumenical communion by bishops and liturgists of various denominations on a processional route through the center of the city. At the hour of Jesus' death, the St. John Passion by Heinrich Schütz will be played in the prayer service, followed in the evening by Good Friday prayers at the cross with songs and the liturgy of the Taizé community. At 5 p.m., cathedral organist Andreas Sieling will play the Good Friday concert: works by Bach and Dupré on the large Sauer organ. The Easter Vigil will begin in the dark church, into which the Easter light will be carried, on which the candles of the congregation will be lit until the resurrection of Christ is proclaimed with the Easter rejoicing. The organ starts up again.

We celebrate the resurrection of Christ with our choirs and the Eucharistic celebration in the festive services on the Easter holidays: On Easter Sunday, Bishop Dr. Christian Stäblein preaches in the festive service and on the morning of Easter Monday, the large festive service takes place together with St. Marien.

No registration is necessary for the services and devotions, admission begins approximatly 45 minutes in advance. We recommend that you arrive early.
